Development of new electrode separator for lithium-ion batteries

July 15,2010

Chisso Corporation (Head office: Chiyoda-ku, Tokyo, President: Shunichi Okada) has developed a new electrode separator for lithium-ion batteries with superior mechanical strength and will start working with lithium-ion battery companies from July, 2010.

Chisso has been targeting environmental and energy areas to launch new businesses.

The separator developed this time is made of a single layer polyolefine with the thickness of 15 ~ 40 um and the porosity of more than 40% and Chisso has achieved a good balance of rigidity and flexibility. These properties should contribute to the productivity and the safety of the batteries and Chisso is particularly targeting laminate type of lithium-ion batteries.

Chisso will initiate pilot-scale equipments and start provisional sales in March 2011 and then in 2012 Chisso plans to complete production equipments for the commercial sales.

Further, Chisso started cooperative development with U.S. (Colorado State) based Porous Power Technologies, LLC for high performance separators and plans to introduce for automotive applications. In this cooperative development, we target that undesirable voltage and temperature fluctuations occur much less frequently in the cells even under conditions of abusive overcharge and overheating. With this technology we expect to reduce the cost and improve the performance, efficiency and life of lithium-ion batteries, particularly for the large-format cells of all types of electric vehicles and stationary power applications.

Chisso has sales experience of battery separator materials based on its non-woven technologies and takes part in the joint technical research association lead by Ministry of Economy, Trade and Industry. Chisso is committed to advance the precise fabrication technology and will contribute to the further technical developments of the secondary batteries, which are effective to cope with the global environmental and energy issues.
